Luggage (Security) while on Eurostar

In reading the posts about security (money belts, keeping hold of day packs, etc), I am now wondering about our bags while taking the Eurostar from London to Paris.

Can anyone share with me what we do with our luggage, and how best to keep it secure? Are the bags put in an overhead compartment like on a plane? If we leave our seats, how do we know the bags are safe? In looking at the website and the train compartments it looks like there is a central place on each car for luggage. Can anyone then access that?

This is our first trip to Europe with our children - so I am trying to imagine how best to make things simply and stress-free. We are travelling with 2 adults, 4 teens, and each person will have one rolling type bag and one backpack (if that helps).

Thank you!

There are overhead compartments, but they can't fit larger bags. Larger bags have to placed in the central area at the ends of the car. It's reasonably safe to leave the bags unsecured. The Eurostar only makes a couple of stops between London and Paris, and all departing passenger have to pass through Immigration/Customs after leaving the train. So it's unlikely someone is going to run-off with your bag; there's a high probability they will get caught. But if it makes you feel more comfortable you can purchase a lock like this:
