Love to watch a show

Hi,we would love to watch a show while we're in London. I heared about buying ticket at a discounted price at Leicester square. My question is we'll arrive London on friday. To watch a saturday show, can we buy it on friday or do we need to buy it same day on saturday. Thanks.

You are not able to get tickets for all shows at Leicester Square, for the more popular shows you should go to the theatre where the show is playing and get the tickets at the box office. We always go to the box office and have always gotten tickets for good seats.

Use the website Michael gave. You need to get there before they open as the queue lines up early. Since you are looking at a Saturday, it'll probably be more crowded. You can get an idea what tickets they may have by looking at the website, but you never know for sure until that day. The ones that aren't for sale at tkts probably are sold out or are popular enough to not have many discounted tickets. You may ge lucky st the box office, but there is less chance than at te tkts.

Actually, the tkts booth that Michael mentions now sells tickets to some shows at a discount in advance. This is a relatively new thing ... they just started doing this in the last year or so. Previously, you could only get discounted tickets on the day of performance.

To get an idea of what might be available, check this site
http://www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk/tkts/whats_on_today/

There are two tabs. One shows only the tickets available for the current date and one shows advance purchase tickets.

We had good luck buying from the theatre box office on performance day. We asked for and received a senior discount, if that applies. We are not that dedicated that we'll use precious travel time to stand in line. Have fun.

Dennis, what age does senior discount starts? I was wondering if the discount is only for UK or does it apply to Paris and Switzerland where we are heading after London. Thanks!

We were 58 and 62. I have no idea how things work elsewhere. In London and throughout southern England I just asked everywhere we went; some winners, some losers. No one ever asked for ID.(Maybe they just saw the wrinkles). In a few places, other Brits in line with us seemed surprised to hear that discounts were available. We saved a few pounds here and there. Got great seats at a very nice price for La Cage aux Folle in London. Good luck!

Note that ticket prices are not as expensive as comparable shows in the US.

It is almost like a built-in discount.

Before you buy, check the seat maps at theatremonkey.com.

I have another question about the TKS line, if we are in line for when it opens at 10:00, how long does it typically take to get a ticket? I have a reservation for tea at 11:45 and want to know if I have enough time to pick up tickets before hand or should I wait until tea is over?

Vanessa,
The wait in line will depend on how many people are in front of you. Last October my wife and I were there just before 9:30 for a 10am opening, and I'd say there were 25-30 people ahead of us. Once the office opens, it's like any box office, with several ticket windows and the normal amount of time to make a transaction. Every now and then you'll see someone up there who hasn't decided what show to see and takes more time, but as I said, there are multiple purchasing windows and only one queue to wait in. I would NOT recommend waiting until after your tea, as I doubt any seats will remain for the good shows that late in the day.

Thanks Matt,
That's the info I was looking for, basically approx. how many people are in line at 10 am on a typical day and how fast the line moves. Looks like an hour will give us enough time.
