Kathy, while I always stay with friends (in Midsomer Norton or Paulton) since my first visit to Somerset 35 years ago, and therefore can't recommend commercial accomodation, I would choose Wells over Glastonbury for a home base. There's enough in and close to the 'city' (smallest in England I believe) to keep you occupied for days and is within easy striking distance of many other sights including Bath. Always found Glastonbury a bit dismal and touristy. One place to check on TripAdvisor or GoogleEarth is the Canon Grange B&B; good (but few) reviews, right across the green from the cathedral and reasonably priced. If it's your first trip to the West Country, make sure you sample the farmhouse scrumpy.
