long holiday in March

I'm thinking about a month long stay in Kent in March. What is weather like? I'd like to base in one town, and do day trips or 2-night stays from there. Can this work?

Weather in March can be cold with rain/wind but who knows?

As to where to stay, will you have a car or rely on public transport? If the latter choose a place with a train station. Will you want to visit London or further afield eg other places in England or France by ferry? Lots of options from fair sized towns to rural villages and/or coast and countryside. The Kent countryside starts about 15 - 20 miles out of central London.

My inclination would be to stay in more than one place just to get a bit of variety or help with the travel logistics.

Glad to help further if you would like. Kent is like my backyard and one of my favourite counties.

A good route planner.

Thanks very much. That's good to know. What I want is to plant myself somewhere, and pretend I live there. Perhaps I should think about mid-March to mid-April. I've looked at OwnersDiriect for places to rent. Any other suggestions for long lets?

Sue - bit later would be better but still no guarantees! At least the spring flowers/greenery should be well underway (touchwood).

You haven't said whether you will be using a car for your trips. Train travel can be a problem in that if you think of London as the hub of a wheel, travelling along the spokes is relatively simple but try to go across and it can be sometimes be a problem.

My first thoughts on where to stay in Kent would be a small pretty country town eg Tenterden or Cranbrook. Somewhere a bit bigger like Sevenoaks with a good train service to London (people commute daily) or even a small city like Canterbury. All within a reasonable distance of old country houses, castles, villages and seaside towns.

Also think about Rye which although just over the border in Sussex is near to the Kent sites/country side.

If you use Google maps you will be able to see the settings of the various towns.
