London with child/wheelchair

Am coming April 09 with husband, daughter, grandson and possibly youngest son, my brother (and his family of three). Any suggestions on lodging? Grandson will be just five and daughter has heart failure (her dream trip). Would love to stay close to the main sights so daughter can nap/rest when needed. Also, daughter is thinking of buying and bringing a wheelchair...is London accessible?

I think London generally is less accessible than most cities in the USA. The Tube (Underground) has stations that are marked as accessible on their Tube maps.

London Underground is a royal pain with a wheelchair.

On the other hand London buses are a joy. They all have hydraulics that lower the boarding platform to street level and special wheelchair zones on the lower deck.

As for the rest of London, most is accessible. All the major museums have wheelchair access, so do most of the theatres and cinemas. All major shops have to be accessible by law and they are.

There are just one or two places that cannot be re-modelled for wheelchair access, for reasons of historical architecture or preservation orders on the building.

The biggest problem is pushing a wheelchair along London's crowded and, in places, very uneven pavements ( sidewalks ). Generally all the kerbs have wheelchair slopes on corners and at convenient places but a full day on the streets of London can be very tiring for whoever does the pushing.
