I will be in London beginning June 12. I am thinking of going to Bath. One way to do this is to go along with a London Walks group that meets at Paddington station in London, and then takes you there and back via rail. I know London Walks has a good reputation -- but has anyone tried this particular way of seeing Bath? Am I better off on my own? thank you.
I'd go on my own and pick up a tour from the Bath T.I. if I really wanted some guiding, but I usually take a long time in museums and wouldn't want to be hurried. There are direct trains from Paddington every half hour - see http://nationalrail.co.uk - and the center of town is easy walking distance from the station.
The "Mayor's Guides"..volunteers who have lived their lives in Bath, offer a free two hour tour daily. Be in the small plaza in front of the Abbey & Roman Baths entrance and go. They run at about 10:30 and 2 pm as I recall. And the trains are easy, though you can save some money if you buy a non-refundable advance ticket.
I did it via London Walks. I enjoyed it, although the weather was miserable. Very enjoyable guide. We had at least an hour or two on our own to do as we wished. Good way to do it in terms of cost if you just want to be able to decide to up and go one day, rather than booking in advance to get cheaper rail price.
