A follow up question to my earlier one about the London Tube Strike scheduled for Tuesday, November 2, 2010: in trying to find [INVALID]s on the internet, I found an article that says the strike will start at 9 pm and continue for 24 hours. We tend to be up early and done for the day early, so for our purposes that sounds like it will affect us on Wednesday, not Tuesday. But I've also read that different unions join in at different times. Can anyone help me with the specifics on this or a good website for [INVALID]s? Our current plan is to walk to Victoria Station and take the rail to Canterbury the day of the strike. And while I'm at it, does anyone know a good website for walking directions/distances in London? Thanks for any wisdom you can pass my way!
Barbara, I just got back from a 10 day trip to England. We had to "overcome" the Tube strike last Monday. I am unaware of a planned tube strike on Nov 2. The buzz that I heard last week was that the union could strike at anytime. The political pressure "not" to strike was very present. My advice is not to worry. Here are a few ideas just in case: You can take the bus (they are red and most are double decker), you can walk depending on your location to Vict Station, worse case take a cab. Also, they still have a few tube trains running with non striking workers. You just have be prepared to squeeze in and hold yoour nose (from all the bad b.o.)!
Barbara, Just returned from London during which time the October 3 strike day occurred. Prior to our trip, I had heard that 24 hour strikes run from 1700 to 1700. I know that some of the stations were closed on the evening of the 3rd. Full train service was not in effect on the evening of the 4th. I got a bus map and determined what lines we needed to do what we wanted to do on the 4th. I found that the bus stops are scattered all around such centers as Trafalger Square and Picadilly Circus. Finding the stop for the line you want can be difficult to find. If you can walk, great. Don't know where Jack got the b.o. reference. We were on some very crowded tube cars and never noticed a trace. And, I have a very sensitive nose.
