London tube stop to hotel

I will be staying at the Holiday Inn Kings Cross (1 Kings Cross Road) on May 20th. I will take the tube from Heathrow and get off at Kings Cross St. Pancras (are these the same station or two separate ones?). Does anyone know how far my hotel is from the tube station? Would it be close enough to walk or will I have to get a taxi? We don't mind walking but not if it's more than a mile or so. I've looked on a map of London and I think I could find it (I'm pretty directionally challenged) if I had some good directions. Thanks so much.

Starla, I'd utilize the walking directions function on Google Maps. I did a search between Kings Cross and your hotel and it seems to be roughly a 10 minute walk. So, depending on your luggage and your fatigue, you could make the decision to walk or take a quick taxi. If you're traveling alone and unsure of your surroundings, you may want to take a taxi. But it's definitely a walkable distance. To answer your question, Kings Cross and St. Pancras are connected, St. Pancras being the hub for international rail (trains like Eurostar) and Kings Cross being mostly British Rail. Good luck on your trip!

If you go to the Holiday Inn website, locate your hotel, the hotel page gives specific directions to the hotel from the Kings Cross tube station and provides a small map. You can print it out and take it with you. Happy travels!

To be precise, King's Cross/St Pancras is one Tube station which serves both the King's Cross and St Pancras National Rail stations.

I know my question was kind of silly as I had done all the things all of you suggested. But I guess I just needed to find how long it would take us to walk. I consider myself relatively smart but when it comes to directions on how to get somewhere, I'm a blooming idiot! I'm sure that after a seven hour flight, we won't mind walking at all, I just don't want to get lost the first thing when I get to London. I was just wondering about the tube station, as we are taking a train out of Kings Cross for Edinburgh on Sunday and I was a little confused about the two names. Thanks for all your help, I'm sure we'll have a great time.

Starla, as Tim says, it's all one big interconnected Tube station underground at King's Cross/St Pancras. (And it is a pretty large facility.) Above ground ground, King's Cross is one rail station and St Pancras is another. They are a several hundred yards apart. I recommend you just plan on taking a cab to your hotel. Yes, you could walk there. But, you will just have come off a long overnight flight and will be jetlagged and a bit punchy. Figuring out which way is east and which way is west when you come up out of the Tube may not be all that easy. You won't need to flag a cab down in the street. (It's a very busy street.) There's a "Taxi rank" alongside the building where cabs and passengers queue up. Follow signs or ask someone. For the trip to Edinburgh, I'm guessing you're taking the East Coast line. If so, sit on the right. About an hour out of Edinburgh, the train runs along or near the North Sea coast, and the views are good. I suggest getting to King's Cross 30-45 minutes before that Edinburgh train departs. That will give you time to do a bit of reconnaissance so you can find your train when its track number is posted on the big board in the center of the station.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. Just taking a taxi sounds like the best plan. We will have plenty of chances to walk back to the hotel during our two day stay. I'm really hoping that the hotel will just let us leave our luggage until our room is ready. I'm one of those people who have a need to be early so I'm sure we will be at the train station well before our train is due to leave!

Staria, I'd be very, very surprised if the hotel doesn't hold your bags. I've never been to a London hotel that wouldn't. Some of the little tiny econo places might not, but that's not where you're staying. Have a great trip.

Transport For London has a useful Journey Planner on their website: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/
I've used it on several occasions to precisely plan my journey into London from Heathrow. If you click on the Advanced Options you can select which transport methods you wish to use and limit your walking distance. You can even choose your departure time and the Journey Planner will calculate the route based upon your selected criteria. For example, if you want to only use the tube and walk, you would only check that option and leave the national rail lines, buses and other transport options unselected. I usually prefer to walk if it makes my journey shorter so I choose that option as well. You will be presented with a selection departure journeys and when you view your preferred options your are also presented with downloadable (or printable) .pdf files for each leg of your journey. This last piece if particularly helpful for walking an unfamiliar neighborhood. Happy travels!
