I will be traveling from Gatwick to Wells, Somerset on 18 Oct 2008 & returning to Gatwick sometime on 26 Oct 2008. I am running into a "dead end" in the process of trying to put all of this together! HELP!!!
If you mean transportation between the two, the problem you may be having is there is no rail connection to Wells. You can go from Gatwick to Wells by coach (UK speak for bus) but it's almost 5 hours one-way. Go here to see coach schedules and book them in: National Express UK websiteYou could also go to Bath, by rail or coach, and then to Wells by coach. Or you could go to Bath, rent a car, and drive to Wells--that's what I once did but I rented the car because I wanted to drive around seeing Glastonbury, Stonehenge, Avebury, etc--if you don't want to do that, renting a car may be more trouble than it's worth.
Ken: Consider taking the train from Gatwick to Bristol. Then take the bus from Bristol to Wells. The bus is only 40 minutes. The Cathedral in Bath is beautiful. My wife is a Brit. I had to go to see the Bishop of Bath & Wells (actually his "surrogate") to get a dispensation to marry since I was not a member of her parish. Bath is actually named after the Roman Baths that were established when those "nice Italian soldiers" occupied that portion of the UK many, many years ago. Good Luck.
You can take a train from Paddington Station in London to Taunton, Somerset and then hire a car - see the beautiful Somerset area including Wells, Cheddar, etc. OR, you could rent a car and drive out of London to the West Country - be careful though, as you know the Brits drive on the other side of the road - I am a Brit, and I am not too keen of driving over there anymore!
