London to Warwick Castle

I'm trying to find the best (and cheapest) way to get there. We have a 6 zone travel card. (with these cards you can't start your journey until 9:30) We're staying near Catford Station which is in zone 3.

At some point we have to leave the London transport system and get on a train, but where? I've tried different websites which give various journey options involving 4 different transfers. (some take 4 hours each way) Has
anyone done this trip and can recommend a route? The castle is open from 10 to 6 so we'd like to get there as soon as possible to make a day of it.

Trains leave from Marylebone (MYB) station in London going to Warwick (the town) and take about 1 1/2 hrs. The website for the info is: www.nationalrail.co.uk. The train station in Warwick is a 15-20 min walk to the castle and central city. Bus from London would be cheaper, but may take too long for a round-trip daytrip. A bus from Stratford-upon-Avon will deposit you close to the castle. Stratford and Warwick Castle can be combined into one whirlwind daytrip. Buses to Stratford from Warwick leave from the city center, maybe a 10-min walk from the castle. My info is from my trip two years ago. Details may have changed since then.

From Catford station take a train to London Blackfriars and a tube (change lines) to Marylebone and a train to Warwick. It will take up to 3 hours as you have to transfer in London.

You should be able to buy point to point tickets from Catford station.

I live in zone 4/5 and I buy travel cards when I go into London and use it to ride the overland trains, tubes, buses, DLR. Otherwise I buy point to point.

Some ticket agents get fussy if you ask to purchase a ticket from the boundary of zone 6 to the destination.

Check train times before you go to maximize your travel time.

You can take the train easily from Marylebone station in London to Warwick. Check on http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ for times.

Just make sure you get off at Warwick Station (1/2 mile from Warwick Castle or so) and not Warwick Parkway Station (about 2 miles outside of Warwick)
