London to Edinburgh. Whats the best way to get there with a family of 5?

Greeting from New Zealand,

We need to get from London to Edinburgh in August and are quite keen on taking the train to see some of the country side. Is that the best option for a family of 5 (18, 18, 15 yrs)?

What train would be our best option and can I prebook it?

Thank you,

Marie

If you want to take the train, your best bet is to book on www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com

They have cheap fares that are released approx. 2 1/2 months before departure. Be sure to check often because the cheap fares disappear quickly.

Currently you can book through April 10. I found fares from London - Edinburgh for £16.50 one-way.

Do also look into buying a family card or some such thing - it makes a big difference and will same you money at least when buying tickets at the train station. Not sure if you can purchase this online or if it would make much of a difference if you are getting advance tickets that are already cheap.

I would take the fastest train you can find. The scenery between London and Edinburgh is nothing to get excited about. Just wanted to warn you.

I agree about boring scenery between London and Ed. If you can find a discount airline, take it. Don't waste your time on the train.

Save your time for seeing the sights in Scotland. Search the web for sights to see so you don't miss any that appeal to you while you are there.

My husband and I enjoy the train trip from London, through York to Edinburgh. If you have the time, split the trip with an overnight in York. if not, the ride is not too bad. We enjoy the scenery- lots of moors, coastlines, etc.
