London to Edinburgh by train

Hi everyone! I apologize I know I have posted this question before but now I can't find the information I received from it or my original post!

We are taking the train from London to Edinburgh in October and I am not sure where to purchase those online? Or should we wait and buy when we are in London? Or should I have my uncle that lives there purchase them for me?

Thanks so much!

Jill, If I remember correctly the last time I made that trip I bought my tickets when I got to London, but not on our day of travel. So that will depend on how much time you have. Try www.nationalrail.co.uk or 011-44-845-748-4950. Good luck

Start looking now because they are more expensive the closer to your travel date.

You can book them on line with a non-UK address at nationalexpresseastcoast.com...echoing Jenufa, the deals won't be around forever :)

Thanks for all your help! I think we may be flying to Scotland after all or even driving up because if I am reading it correctly it is 202.00 pounds for the both of us which equals $400.00 US dollars.

Now that I am revisiting this website it looks like the one I was directed to before and I know the prices were drastically lower. Do you think these prices will flucuate at all? I knew Europe was going to be expensive but not this expensive!

Thanks

Jill,

If you look on the right-hand side of the homepage at www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com, you will see that as of today you cannot book tickets beyond 28 September. I just did a dummy London-Edinburgh booking for 25 September and got a fare of £14. The key to getting a discount fare is to book as soon as the "window" opens. Keep checking the site.

THANK YOU!!!!

I think you were the one that posted that help me before! Thanks so much. I am in the middle of writing my master's thesis and I think my brain is at the point of shutting down since I can't even navigate a website!

Thank you all of you!!!

Apparently my grammar has gone downhill as well! :)

Thank again!

You're welcome! Best wishes to you as you complete your master's thesis. I can't think of a better way to celebrate finishing the work for your degree than to take a trip to Europe. That's exactly how my wife and I helped our daughter celebrate her getting her master's degree in 2005. The three of us went to London, Ireland, and France.

Since I was an English major in college, I can't say that good grammar isn't important--but all is forgiven. :)

It's a pleasure to help someone from Spokane. I used to live in both Colville and Lewiston.

I would suggest you try:www.virgintrains.co.uk. In their "buy ticket" section, I tried Euston to Edinburgh Park (one of the edinburgh stations). The date I entered was Aug 5th. A standard advance single would be 72 pounds 50p. There are several trains on that day. The one I chose left at 9.40am arrived Edinburgh 14.56. Just over 5hrs later. It is not direct. There are 2 changes. If you want to book 1st advance single, the price is 125pounds 50p. Same train.Book your seat at same time.
Having just recently used the first class travel Euston to Manchester (42pounds 50p) I can tell you, it spoils you for any other train travel! Virgin trainshave their own 1st class lounges at the stations-free coffee/tea/snacks. They also have a great menu on board. depending on the time of day, you can choose from breakfast, lunch or dinner(included in the price of the ticket) There are also all day snacks and beverages. There are plug ins for your laptop and/or cell phone by the seat.
I am a senior. The train staff were great.I was very comfortable and enjoyed my train journey very much!
The rates may be lower in October ?
If you are thinking of going by car, I can tell you that the price of diesel in England, in June, was 1pound.30p ($2.60 Canadian a litre!) That is twice what we pay here! Also, the motorways are packed with traffic. So, it's possible to spend time in traffic jams!

Hope you have a wonderful trip, which ever way you choose to travel

Hello all -

Does anyone know why the National Rail web site is not releasing tickets for September 21 yet? Of course, that's the day we are looking to buy London to Edinburgh tickets.

Thanks!

I took the train round trip from London to Edinburgh a few years ago. My train left early in the morning and I did not have to change trains. It was a fun way to see the countryside and visit Scotland while my husband stayed in London. I wish I had thought to pack a picnic lunch for the train. We have driven a lot of that area on another trip, but the train was faster and more relaxing.

Cory,

The note I alluded to above on the NXEC site says that booking is open through 28 September, with the exception of 21 and 27 September; but no explanation is given.

So I was getting ready to purchase our tickets via the website Tim provided me with and only part of the page will load. The part I need that will not load is the where you input your point to point and the day/time of when you would like to travel.

I have checked our internet connections and I have tried on several different computers. I have sent an email to them inquiring about it, but I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issue?

Thanks

I also have had trouble getting the left side of the screen to load (where you input your information). However, after refreshing the page a few times it pops up. It seems to do this everytime I got to the page. Not sure what you can do to fix it, but you're not the only one having problems!

Success! Late last night after I got home from work I was finally able to get the page to load! I didn't take any chances and bought my tickets right away!

Checked it again this morning and its still loading properly! Not sure though how long it will last!

Jill -

I'm taking the train from Edinburgh to London this month, and when I tried to get my tickets online, I had quite a few problems too. I think it's their website. When I first tried, the tickets were about 17 pounds each, but when I actually bought the tickets a week or two later, they had about doubled in price. So earlier is better.

It has to be their website. Because I went back on to buy another set of train tickets during my lunch break and no luck. I can't get it to upload.

I wish I would have bought all my tickets last night, but at 1:00 am I was a little tired!

I did receive a couple private messages and some people were able to get it to work last night. However, a customer service rep from the company actually emailed me back and said he saw I finally was able to get my tickets since I registered on their website, but to let him know if I had more problems!

This isn't at all an answer to your question, but I just wanted to say good luck on your thesis. I defended mine in March, graduated in May, and was on a plane to Britain in June. I just kept reminding myself the whole time I was writing, "Three months from now this will all be over and I'll be in Europe." It was a great way to celebrate FINALLY being done with school - you'll be there before you know it!

Emily,

Thank you for the kind words! I hope that I never have to read another article for research or edit another chapter again! Which now means I won't be going for my PHD after this I miss being sane!
