I want to take the train To Avebury, spend the night there at Mrs.Dixon's B&B, look at the stones, and take the train back to London, next day. Does the train stop at Avebury, and The phone # in Rick's guide book for the B&B in Avebury isn't in service, does anyone have the current # or recommend another B&B in or near Avebury. Thank you, Thank you
I think the closest you can get by train is to Swindon, which is about 10 miles from Avebury. Check rail schedules (and purchase discount tickets) at nationalrail.co.uk (3-4 trains/hour). There appear to be several buses a day that go from Swindon to Avebury. Check www.wdbus.co.uk (bus lines 5 and 6)
As for Mrs. Dixon's, the number I've found lists it as 011-44-1672-539-588.
You take the Train to Swindon.
At Swindon you walk out of the station and follow the signs for the bus station. Once there you take the local Devizes bus. Ask the driver to tell you when you are coming to Avebury and he'll set you down in the village centre. Go to the tourist information shop and they'll direct you to Mrs Dixons.
To get back do the whole thing in reverse.
