London School of Economics

Is the London School of Economics worth a visit? I'll be staying nearby in the Covent Garden/Soho area. I love listening to their podcasts and I'm sure I'd enjoy the bookstores nearby. Is the campus worth seeing or is it a boring commuter school with dull architecture?

Their website will give you more info and has a virtual tour. As you will see their buildings are a mixture of new and old alongside other non LSE buildings. Most non-students using these streets will unaware that they are on a "campus".

I was past the LSE today, just across the road from the St Clement Danes Royal Air Force church of "oranges and lemons" fame in the nursery rhyme. The only way to tell which buildings are LSE and which aren't - they are along the roads of the area and there is no "campus" as you would have in an American university - are the small square LSE signs on the gates or somewhere on the building fronts. The biggest sign is on the "Old" building. Many of the buildings are quite new, post Blitz, but some are survivors. Being close to the River it got a fair amount of attention from the Luftwaffe. I was looking today the bomb damage still very clearly visible on the northeast corner of St Clement Danes as I was listening to their wonderful peal of 5000 changes in memory of Nelson Mandela.
