We'd like to do a day trip in March 2011 from London to Windsor. Is it necessary to reserve times and seats for such a relatively short trip time or should we just go for an anytime return? What do people suggest with this route and type of day trip?
You do not need to buy tickets in advance.
There are no cheap advance purchase tickets on this run and no seat reservations so a person buying a ticket 5 minutes before departure has the same access to seats as someone who has bought tickets 3 months in advance.
this is in effect just a comuter train, get on and grab a seat. Nominally you are going against the commuter traffic so shouldnt be a problem getting a seat
There are TWO stations in Windsor. Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windsor_%26_Eton_Central_railway_station
Buy same-day return tickets (£9.00).
Depending on the time you plan to travel, you may have to change at Slough for the Windsor train (very easy and well signed). If you look at the schedule ahead of time, you might be able to get a direct train, though. I like traveling from Paddington, as the arrival station in Windsor is so nice- it has shops, small market-like stands and restruants. It is also just a very short walk to the main area of town and the castle. Windsor is a lovely place to visit.
All the trains from Paddington arrives at Windsor & Eton Station and require a change in Slough, which all you have to do is to change platforms. From London to Windsor is a 35 minute train ride. When you exit the train go to your left and walk up to High Street (2 minute walk) and right there will be the Castle. While in Windsor you can tour the castle..... St. George's Chapel...visit the Royal Mews, outside of the castle on St. Albans Street.....walk to Windsor Great Park a five minute walk....walk to Eton (about an 8 minute walk), visit Eton college....have tea at the Crooked House which is on High Street.....have lunch at the Horse and Groom Pub across the street from the castle on Castle Hill. Have a great trip.
you can also take bus to windsor. check the band marching schedule first - they do it every other day. most people day trip to see the castle. and, eaton is cross river so if you want you can see eaton college. the school is not open to public, but it's fun to see bunch of harry porter looking kids walking around. there is a little shopping mall across street from the castle, and i know some of the princesses may shop there - if you're luck to see them.
Thank you! All such helpful advice. I appreciate your comments.
