London -- northwest / Euston / King's Cross / St Pancras area

I will be in London 4 nights at the end of July. Looking to "base" myself in the Euston Station/King's Cross/St Pancras area. Any suggestions on small hotels or B&Bs in the area? Also, sites that are "must see/must do" and any areas to avoid? Thanks much!

Be sure to check out the British Library which is a block away from Euston. When I was there last fall there was a great exhibit on Henry theVIII. The regular exhibits were good too. Pam

Hi Kevin,

We are four seniors staying in the area for the first time and the suggested Hotel for us is the Harlingford. We are staying there for a week in September on a recommendation of a friend. Bkfst is included and we expect to be able to chat with others for suggestions to see in London. We are old timers in travel and no longer have to stay at the cheapest places and the Harlingford is mid-range in price.

We also look forward to revisiting the British Library, and we will also go the Ceremony of the Keys and have our tickets!

Good luck in your travels!

Mollie and chums

No matter what you decide, I would check Tripadvisor and Venere (only people who booked through Venere can post a review, unlike TA).

Many thanks for all the helpful replies! After checking out all options, sifting through some additional resources, we decided on the Mentone Hotel in Bloomsbury. Location as a "base" for what we want to do and see, price, TA reviews, and speaking to someone who actually stayed there recently helped us decide. Keep traveling!

Kevin: My wife and I stayed at the Mentone for 3 weeks in the summer of 1975. While it has apparently been renovated and upgraded over the years, I can speak to the location which of course hasn't changed. Euston, Kings Cross/St Pancras are all a short walk away. Russell Square Tube stop and the British Museum are a few minutes walk the other way. There are lots of shops in the neighborhood, but the immediate surroundings are a beautiful little private park (Cartwright Gardens) and some dorms of the U of London. There is some traffic noise from Euston Road to the north, but not that much close at hand. Frankly, of all the neighborhoods I have stayed in when visiting London, I liked this one the most. Enjoy!
