London Newbie!!

Hello- My daughter will be attending Central Saint Maritin University in London for Spring semester 2012. Her dorms are located by the King's Cross tube station. The Study abroad program recommended hotels are The Goodenough Club, Sidney Hotel in Victoria, Thistle Hyde Park and Hotel Premier Inn. Any recommendations on which would be a better choice? Don't want to spend too much but, would like to stay in a nice place and close to her dorms. Thank you

There are some nice hotels in the King's Cross/St Pancras area, but the area itself is not very interesting. Victoria is only a Tube ride away with no transfers, and the same may be true of the Hyde Park hotel. There appears to be a Premier Inn at Kings Cross (I Googled it) and that might be your best choice.
Around $165 was quoted. I haven't stayed there myself.

I've had a look at the school's website and see that the campus you are speaking about is the other side of the Regents Canal, kind of out the back door of St Pancras / Kings Cross. That area is slowly improving, and the further back from Euston Road probably the better. In regards to visiting her, if you want close, The Goodenough Club, haven't heard of it - don't know Sidney Hotel in Victoria, a fair distance away, not close - 5 Underground stops away
Thistle Hyde Park, even further away, 7 tube stops away, and Thistle hotels aren't terribly spiffing yet not terrifically cheap Hotel Premier Inn - It would be the Premier Inn . There's no Hotel in the name. There is one in Euston Road over the road from the British Library, a very short walk to the campus. Many people at the helpline have stayed there and I haven't heard anything much bad about it. It certainly is budget, but clean, close, and safe. My friends have also stayed there. Not on your list is the Travelodge in Grays Inn Road. Very budget, the neighborhood is improving beyond its previous rep, the building is a converted pretty old building that is attractive from the street. Address is http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/info?hotelId=258&utm_source=google&utm_medium=maps&utm_campaign=London%20Kings%20Cross You might have a look. It would be about a 10 minute walk to the campus. Good luck planning...

Hi Maria It is a lot more safe than it used to be. The immediate area around the station, like any major station, can get dodgy getting into night and there can be plenty of minor crime. Lots of people, minds on something else, people wanting to take advantage. Take reasonable precautions and be aware of your surroundings. KX used to have a terrible rep for drugs and prostitution; most of that is gone now. I would have no concerns about recommending the Premier Inn. Be sure to be careful crossing the roads. The roads around there have lots of traffic 24/7, and there is quite a lot construction around KX as they rebuild the station. Just be careful.
