London musicals

I am looking forward to seeing a musical or two in London (not sure which ones yet), but am concerned about returning at night after the show. Obviously it depends on the hotel I'm sure, but I am still in planning stages. Looking at hotels near Victoria, but also Rosebery Hall at LSE. Any advice, or could someone point me to more information about traveling at night in London? We are college age, traveling as a couple, but don't have much "city experience", hence my "fear" :-p Thanks!

You'll be fine. London is lively at night. Lots a people out enjoying theatre, shopping, movies, pubs, cafes. Have NEVER felt unsafe anywhere in London, night or day. Theatre district is well lit. London has more CCTV cameras than anywhere in the world. Big Bother IS watching. These were the tickets that were half price today: http://www.tkts.co.uk/whats-on-sale-today/
Wicked, Billy Elliot, Chicago are wonderful musicals.

Katie, I've attended musicals (Theatres close to Leicester Square) and returned to the Victoria Station area later at night (around midnight) and never felt threatened or had any problems at all. As there are two of you, I doubt that you'll have any trouble. You may find it helpful to have a look at the England or London Guidebooks, as they have good information not only on transportation but also getting about safely. If this is your first trip "across the pond", you may also want to read Europe Through The Back Door. As with any large city, you may occasionally encounter "undesirables" (people "relieving themselves" on the street or getting rid of the excess beer they've just consumed), but I've seen that at home also so don't find it to be a problem. Cheers!

Thanks so much for the advice. Yeah I would LOVE to read ANY of Rick's books, but I'm studying abroad in Germany and don't really have access to them, so my mom has been reading to me and taking notes from her books back home! Yeah I've experienced the late night return from the theatre, just not used to it yet. I'm sure it'll be fine. Thanks again! I'll definitely check out TKTS, i've heard good things.

What the others say... The biggest problem is alcohol. Stay away from most of it and you will be fine. The problems we have are when people over consume and lose track of who they are, where they are and where they want to go. Theatreland is full of people coming and going to the shows. Don't get into a minicab without a reservation. Ever. Really. Ever. They are uninsured and illegal without reservations. Use a black cab or tube or bus. Or reserve a minicab. Don't use rickshaws no matter how cute. They are uninsured. Enjoy...

London is a very safe city...you will be fine. I go to the theater everytime we are in London and have never felt unsafe going back to the hotel. There are so many great musicals, but one of the best is The Lion King. Have fun in London.

Tubes are safe and run late- toward the last few of the day they do get busy. If you are walking distance from a Tube station you should be OK and should feel safe taxis are an alternate, but they are popular and not always eay to get . You probably could also find out from your hotel about the hearest night buses - although again much more limited in service and space than the Tube

Places are always safe it's just that people aren't. Alcohol and drugs force them do crimes and others to lose consciousness. Be alert and stay conscious, have a happy vacation.

I'm probably the last person in the world to see Les Miz, but I enjoyed the London production. I did two nights of theatre not far from Piccadily Circuls and two nights of opera, one near Covent Gardens (my unfavorite tube stop because you really have to take an elevator to reach the street.) I never had the slightest concern about physical safety. I would follow Nigel's advice and be careful about drinking in a city you don't know well.

I've traveled in London and had no problem. When I was on the tube one night and lots of rowdies in my car, I got off at the next station and waited for another train. Be aware of your surroundings, know where you're going... easy to figure out from free maps. Study the maps at the underground so you know which exit is best.
