London Museums - Current Exhibits and Tutankhamun

A few questions... are all the museums in London really free? For those that have been there recently - what are some of the best exhibits up? I heard King Tut is in town, also - anyone been to it?

Thanks...

I googled King Tut and found this link http://www.kingtut.org/plan_your_visit?location=london

As stated earlier the museums are free but the special exhibits have a fee. On my recent trip we went to several museums but did not pay for any special exhibits - the British museum has a special exhibit on Hadrian unfortunately it was not open when I was there. I would have paid for that one.

The Imperial War Museum has a special exhibit on the Holocaust, which is also free. It is worthwhile although they encourage young kids do not go in. My 10 year old really got a lot out of it. The IWM has a James bond special exhibit for a fee.

The Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum are outstanding but there is a fee for that. I could spend hours and hours in there. The fee for these is well worth it.

The British Museum is our favorite. Two other excellent museums to consider: The Museum of the City of London which is near the Barbican and The Victoria and Albert which is near Hyde / Kensington Park. These museums focus more on history. At the Victoria and Albert, the rooms about Britain are fascinating. There are also some fun interactive things to do there.

The Tut exhibition is at the Millenium Dome (also called the O2 dome), and it's fantastic. Tube goes right to the dome, but take the southern route (through Southwark) as a station on the northern side is closed, but they don't tell you until you arrive there. We saw it last month at the beginning of a 30-day trip.

The Tut exhibit closes Aug 31st, which is sad as we're in London on Sept 22nd... I saw the Tut exhibit when it came to Seattle in 1978 and it was a life-changing event for me at 8 years old!!

It's not Europe but the exhibit "Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharoahs" is coming to Atlanta--November 15, 2008. The exhibit will be here until May 25, 2009. More info at: http://carlos.emory.edu/tut/

I loved the free museum of the natural sciences, across from the V&A museum. The dinasaur wing was fabulous. Also the British Museum and the National Gallery are free and fabulous.

I love the British Museum. Even without the Tut exibit their Egyptian collection is great.

Kinda off-topic, but the "Tut exhibit" doesn't actually have Tut himself-just some of the artifacts from his tomb, along with a bunch of other artifacts. I saw the show when it was here in Los Angeles-well worth the time and money.

We just returned home after visiting the Churchill War Museum and The Imperial War Museum. Both were excellent!
