I am not much of a shopper but I would like to experience a couple of the London street markets and antique markets and wander around. I am wondering whether any one knows of a market that might be good for vintage postcards and/or vintage photos or other paper ephemera. Any ideas? Has anyone spotted these types of things? thanks from Portland, OR
Spitalfield's would be a good market to peruse. I found some excellent pieces of antique sheet music that I purchased for a friend. I'd also wander around Brick Lane and pop into some of the stores to look.
Wendy, check out the stores in the Cecil Court area near the Leicester Tube stop (www.cecilcourt.co.uk)
Portobello Road is still a favourite of ours and, yes, I have spotted the sort of thing you mention. You just have to look. It took me a couple of visits there before I found old buttons.
There's at least one stall in Covent Garden with vintage photos of movie stars/movies and some postcards. Often others - especially on Fridays and Saturdays (the stalls change almost every day there). You might also check out Camden Lock markets.
FYI one day a week covent garden has antique stalls often this is good way to look at antiques
I second Spitafield's and Camden Locks. Avoid Portobello Road, it's become a claustrophobic tourist trap where it's impossible to look at anything.
