London Long Term 'Rental'

I have booked a hotel I've stayed in before, which was very basic, but in a safe area. 45 pounds WC down the hall type.
Because I will be there for 3 weeks (with 2-3 days outside of London),I was wondering if there were apartments or self catering places people have been to (near transport - bus/Tube) that are safe(walking home alone at night after a play) that would be recommended. One reason I went with a hotel, was the cancellation policy; some of the apartments I saw had no refund if something happened.

Thanks!

Depending on what time of year you're going to be in London, you can stay in the Halls of Residence at some London Colleges. Imperial College is one, and it's in a great location near the V&A. Safe at night too. I stayed in their hotel 2 years ago, £50 a night, including huge breakfast, and had my own bathroom.Very clean too. Lots of Americans staying there!

Maggie's idea is a good one. London School of Economics has some rooms for rent all year round at Northumberland House which are only a bit more than 45 pounds but all their rooms have en suite bathrooms with your own private shower/sink/toilet, daily maid service and you have access to basic kitchen facilities, coin-op laundry and internet (both WiFi and a computer room with several desktops to use). Northumberland is located less than 2 blocks from Trafalgar Square and it's near major Tube and bus stops. Neighborhood well lit and safe. I stayed there 2 weeks and walked around at night alone with no problems (it's very close to the Theatre District). Plus, no need for a big security deposit so if you need to cancel close to your arrival date, you won't lose a bunch of money like you would on an apartment rental.

I've stayed in Northumberland, Carr-Saunders, High Holborn, and also with Westminster at Wigram House... Northumberland was probably my fave location. Carr-Saunders was a good location, liked the neighbourhood, great hot breakfast. Holborn also had a great breakfast, seemed like more students in residence. At Wigram I had a 2 bed "flat" that had a bathroom and a kitchenette... nice location, loved having the kitchenette. Also had a television, which I have to say was fabulous. Nothing like finishing an evening watching British tele that's current and not 6 months or a year behind.

If I was choosing again... probably Wigram, with Holborn a close second. A very close second. And CS a close third.
