London in January, what to pack

I've been to London before but never in the winter. What should I pack to prepare for the weather in January?

And a hat! When the cold wind blows wearing a warm hat makes all the difference! Also nothing worse than cold feet so some warm tights/socks. ........ Think about fleece/manmade fibres for scarf, gloves etc, lighter to carry and easy to wash if necessary. If you don't mind waiting till you get here you can buy them at very reasonable prices ......... It will feel very hot in some shops etc so layers rather than bulky clothes so you can remove and carry them when needed. You will also feel warmer. And maybe with a bit of luck, it will not be that cold!

We used to go to London a lot in Nov/Dec. The weather is usually similar to what we have here in NC in the winter. Layers are what work! Here's what I usually took: Wear on plane: black cotton-blend pants (I am allergic to wool and rather hot-natured), long sleeve turtleneck/T-shirt and a long-sleeved "big shirt" {button up that can look a bit like a jacket}, water resistant winter coat with hood, good walking shoes - black. Pack in carry-on suitcase: 2-3 pair black or khaki cotton-blend pants, 3 -5 T-shirts/turtlenecks (1 short sleeve, rest long) 1 or 2 "big shirts", optional 1-2 sweaters/cardigans (all tops and pants as well as scaves color co-ordinate), 3-5 bras, enough panties for at least 1 week (often enough for entire trip) same with socks, gloves, hat or hooded scarf.

But definitely layer. I was there a few years ago in January, and it was so warm I had to take my coat off and just had my turtleneck and wool sweater on.

It rains about 2 inches everymonth of the year and Jan high is around 45 but averages can leave cold and very wet ( I landed 35 years ago in the worst storm in 50 years.
