There is a new Premier Inn at Leicester Square. I haven't stayed there, but Premier Inn is a moderate priced chains.

The 'theatre district' is rather large. Are you planning to go to specific theatres? Most are within a short walk of a tube station and muiltiple bus stops, so if you have an Oyster Card or TravelPass, you can get to almost any of them easily. Knowing your budget and lodging requirements (single, double, or family room, breakfast included or not, etc.),other activities you have planned, and your arrival and departure locations (Heathrow, Gatwick, St. Pancras (for the Eurostar, etc.), will help us make good suggesstions.

I stayed at the Morgan Hotel, around the corner from the British Museum. It's probably 10-20 minutes' walk to many of the theatres near Leicester Square. Better, though, is that there are buses that stop right in front and go there. Coming back, the buses stop one block over (one-way streets), in front of the supermarket (also very convenient to pick something up on the way home). I like it better than staying closer, just because it is a much quieter place at night.

Thanks for your reply. My adult daughter and I will be traveling together. We will be coming by train from Paris on a Sunday afternoon and leaving late on Tuesday. We have tickets for Buckingham palace on Monday morning at 9 or thereabouts. We want to go to the theatre on at least one night. We would probably want to do the bus tour on Sunday, so we should be close to a stop. I do have a reservation at the Montague in Bloomsbury, but looking at Google Earth, it appears to be alamost a mile from Leicester Square. My daughter is looking for something closer to the action. I have been to London twice before and stayed in the West End near the Marble Arch and in Victoria. Our budget is 200 pounds/night for both of us. We will share a twin room. Any suggestions are very welcome.

Karen, Bloomsbury is quite central and very "close to the action". A mile is not that far ... a 20 minute walk. Take the tube and it is even quicker.

We stayed at the Morgan Hotel in Bloomsbury and walked to the theatre district every night. It was about a mile - not a difficult walk. Some of the theatres are even closer than that. Carry a small folding umbrella or jacket with hood in case it's raining when the play gets out - cabs are hard to get when the threatres let out.

Not all theatres are located in the theatre district. So if you don't plan on pre-booking tickets, there is no need to pick a hotel based on its proximity to that area. The play/musical you decide to see might be in a theatre in another area (there is one or more in Victoria for example) London is a well laid out city that is easy to walk, with great public tansportation on the tube and buses. We have stayed in the Covent Garden and the Victoria Station areas multiple times. We love going to musicals and had no problems(in more than 40 trips over 20+ years) getting to or from the theatres- or any other places we wanted to visit.
There is a poster on TripAdvisor called TexScott. He has developed a list of 'budget' hotels in London, sorted by neighborhood. They are all under 125 GBP, so well within your budget. You might find it helpful. Here is a link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HeA7aE16Ocbq89n5Fxjxx0v61kLlsU3j8S4mk8Uqfeo/edit?hl=en_US&pli=1
