London - Hotels Hilton / Marriott

I have points to use for a hotel in London at Hilton and Marriott. Any suggestions as to which are the best of both?

As hotels the 3 hotels are all very similar, very large purpose built blocks with the normal 4 star services.
The Hilton is attached to Terminal 4, but is quite isolated. To get to the other terminals you have to get at least one train that runs every 15 minutes but is free. Apart from the terminal there are no other facilities and food etc is very expensive.
Good point is you can get into London cheaply on Underground. Marriott Heathrow is a large 'conference' hotel along the main hotel strip. McDonalds' and pubs are in reach. Marriott Windsor still has the airport bus to terminals and may well be less points. You can get a bus to Windsor Castle outside and there are local steak houses, pubs nearby at non airport prices

I'd go to tripadvisor.com to see how people who stayed in those hotels rate them.

If you are looking for a hotel in central London, Marriott County Hall is a great location right on the Thames by the London Eye and across from Parliament.

We have stayed at the Maida Vail and at the Grosvenor House (now a JW) both on points. Maida Vail was newer and used less points, but was a long ride from Piccadilly Station. Grosvenor House had so much character and class and overlooks Hyde Park. Part of our family had gold status, so we got to also use the concierge suite some for free breakfast and tea. We didn't eat at either hotel because of the extra high price. We stayed one night at the Renaissance at Heathrow and it was nice. We paid for it and a ride to the airport the next morning on the shuttle. Also had fish and chips in their bar area in the afternoon which was so big that it was our lunch and dinner conbined. If you have the points, you won't regret staying at the Grovesnor House on Park Lane. We spent three weeks in the UK in Sept. and were not ready to come home. We traded for a time share in the Lake District which worked out okay.

The Hilton in Paddington Station is very nice and very convient. Especially if you are flying in or out of Heathrow.

I have stayed at quite a few of the Marriotts in London and also the Hilton Paddington. From a tourist perspective, the Marriott County Hall is a great location directly across from Big Ben - especially if your room overlooks the Thames and Big Ben. From a luxury standpoint, the Renaissance Chancery Court (approx. 50 yds from the exit of Holborn tube) wins hands down (this is part of the Marriott chain). I'm afraid the Hilton Paddington is decent but I would not recommend from a location/tourist standpoint.

For great details and comparisons, besides checking out Tripadvisor, also check out Flyertalk.com where all the frequent flyers and stayers have posted their opinions. All of the London Marriotts have been compared and contrasted.

Richard - I have stayed at many of the Hiltons in London on points. My favorite is the Waldorf (stayed there 3 times) - the service is wonderful and it's in a great location. Many buses drop you off right in front and you are no more than a 7 minute walk from three tube stations - Covent Garden, Temple and Holborn. If you are a Gold or Diamond HHonors member, you will get access to their executive lounge which serves food all day and has free internet access. This year I noticed they added hot food to their breakfast offerings.

The Paddington is also very nice. It's more of a business hotel and getting to the central tourist areas takes a while on the bus or the tube. Since it is at the train station, it's just steps from the HEX tracks and several shops. They also have an executive lounge for Gold and Diamond members with free internet access.

I don't really like the Park Lane Hilton - but that's just my personal preference. The Green Park hotel is getting old and needs work - the reviews on TripAdvisor keep getting worse. It's too bad because it's in an excellent location.

I also agree with Dave - go to TripAdvisor and check the ratings...
