London Hotels for families

I have asked this question before, but I still am not decided on our London hotel for our July 2011 trip. We have the Holiday Inn Earls Court booked right now for 118GBP a night, with a breakfast. This room gives us a double bed and sofa bed, but we are not small people and our boys are not going to fit in a double sofa bed.....one will be on the floor :( I can't bring myself to pay for two rooms, it is soooo expensive, but I have spent hours looking for hotels in London that will either fit four comfortably, or two cheap rooms. We would like a breakfast, as our teens eat a lot, and any "free" food is good. We are only doing two nights in London, as we have a rental near Bath, then we are going to Scotland for a week. Any other suggestions for our London hotel? Thanks!!!

Did you check this place out? http://www.alhambrahotel.com/ They have quads and the breakfast is outstanding and extremely filling. Price is about the same as the Holiday Inn. There is a tube station entrance (King's Cross) 200 feet away. Please note, the quads are not big rooms (at least the one I stayed in) but they are clean and safe and affordable.

Have you considered booking 2 rooms at one of the budget hotels like easyhotel? It certainly will not be luxury, but you could get rooms with twin beds. Another option might be to bid for two rooms on priceline ("name your own price"). Check the websites betterbidding.com or biddingfortravel.com for tips on bidding.

Check out the London School of Economics. They sometimes include breakfast, and all have either kitchen priviledges or a kitchen or kitchenett. They have everything from single dorm rooms, to suites and apartments. And I don't think there is a minimal time required. Also, they have several locations, including on just off Trafalgar Square.

Have you considered a family room in a hostel? You can find one more centrally located than Earl's Court for less than you are paying at the Holiday Inn, and no one will have to sleep on the floor. For example, London Central, which is near Oxford St, has a room with 4 beds and ensuite bathroom for £78.00 per night. See this website: https://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/search-results.aspx

I stayed last October for several days at the City Inn Westminster at rates that varied day by day but were within range of 118GPB. The room had no sofa bed (no sofa) but, if memory serves, rollaways were available. Might be worth checking out. The room was nice and quite modern, and medium size by North American standards. I have stayed in London hotel rooms that were no larger that the double bed plus 2-3 feet on three sides, with closet space for, maybe, two small bags. I'd suggest calling any likely hotel directly and explaining your situation. Not to be paranoid, but if one son sleeps on the floor, you want to be sure there's room for him after the sofa bed opens or the rollaway is in place.

in 2004 our family stayed in London on two separate occasions at the balmoral house hotel, 156 Sussex Gardens, Kensington. It was a good location for us, Paddington Station is around the corner, walking distance. Easy access to the tube and very near Kensington Gardens and Castle. The quint room had 5 separate beds and ensuite bath.

My wife and I and our 2 teen-age sons stayed in the Hotel Novotel in Hammersmith, which is across the street from the Underground Station. We had a double bed and either a pull-out couch or 2 twins beds. It was tight but we spent so little time in the hotel that we didn't mind. Novotel provides guests an extensive breakfast buffet. My wife and I did not need the buffet, but it was totally worth it for 2 constantly hungry teenage boys. You don't want to get on the Tube until after 9:00, so our sons would eat about 8:30 and would be fine with only a sandwich at lunch (Pret-A-Manger and Marks & Spencer both sell sandwiches at relatively affordable prices). For supper, we would look for a gastro-pub or a small family restaurant.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I am still not decided on where or how many rooms...but at least I have some ideas now!!! My husband prefers hotels to hostels, and a/c......so I have looked at the Premier Inn Kensington Olympia, it has a double and two twin beds and breakfast, for around 200 cnd /night, which is right on budget. It says it is close to the tube also, right on the Picadilly Line, from Heathrow. Anyone been there? Thanks

Sandi, You might want to compare the Premier Inn Kensington Earls Court (Knaresborough Place) to the Premier Inn Kensington Olympia. The Earls Court one relatively new and is frequently recommended on tripadvisor. They are in the same general area. Either location is fine, but the Kensington Olympia one is on a very busy road.

If you haven't already done so, you might also want to look at the Premier Inn near Victoria Station. There's also one near the Tower of London. I'm not a big fan of the Earl's Court area. It's not a bad area, just a bit far out IMO, particularly if you are a first-time visitor. You can check tripadvisor.com for traveler reviews of any hotel you are considering.

Sandi,
On our first trip to London with our 2 kids, we stayed at the Harlingford Hotel near Russell Square. They have at least one room called a Family Room that sleeps four. The place is terrific, reasonably priced, and includes an ample breakfast. They have a website and are well-reviewed by all of the books. Good luck.
