I'm looking for a comfortable, safe place to stay during my 5 day visit to London this October. I'll be traveling as a single woman and would love a private room option that isn't going to break the bank. Any suggestions?
Perhaps the Ridgemount Hotel on Gower Street would suit you.
Jenn, I have stayed in two B&B networks that really worked well for us and might be fun for you: London Home to Home, and At Home in London. Most of the houses have only one or two rooms to rent, and for 60-75 GBP per night including breakfast you get a real connection with your host. Our hostess in CHiswick did a load of laundry [no charge], and I had a great discussion about health care with our hostess in Cornwall Gardens [this was the summer of 2009]. PM for more information if needed. Have a great trip!
For a safe and convenient location, I recommend the Green Park Hilton. You can walk almost everywhere from there. Reasonable breakfasts right around the corner at Pret. I don't know what you consider affordable, however.
Hi Jenn! I have traveled solo to London 3 times and had a blast each time. I have stayed at the Hotel Meridiana (on Argylle Square down the street from King's Cross station) during my first stay, Renaissance London Heathrow for my second trip and Chancerey Court Renaissance on Holborn. Meridiana is a B&B and was the most economical and convenient out of the 3. The Chancerey Court was the best and convenient also. There are so plenty of B&B's along Argylle Square to choose from. Now, the area around King's Cross is not exactly Primrose Hill in comparison but it has gotten a lot better with the opening of the St. Pancras train station and other establishments. A few things with these B&B's are that they have no lifts and most of the rooms have to share bathrooms. I never had an issue with the Meridiana in terms of the bathrooms and safety. In fact, I am going to stay with them in September. Check out their website at http://hotelmeridian.co.uk. I hope that helps. Happy Travels!
Not sure what your price range is ... There are a few reasonably-priced hotels on Gower Street which look ok and have received good reviews on Tripadvisor and this forum. Google 'Gower Street London hotels" and you'll see them. Gower Street is in the university area and near the British Museum. Once you've narrowed down your choices you can come back to this forum and ask about people's experiences with specific hotels.
We just got back from 10 days in England and Scotland and we stayed at the London Vicarage Hotel which is close to both Notting Hill and Kensington and in between two tube stops, Notting Hill Gate and High Street Kensington. The room was very small but a great location. You can also take the tube to Paddington and then on to Heathrow from there as well.
