London Home Base - Near Tower of London or St. James?

We are looking at 4 nights in London in May. We have a couple of options we're looking at for our place to stay (flats found as VRBO.com listings which we think are of similar quality and price). We were wondering if people had thoughts on what location makes a better home base for a first timer in London - very close to the Tower of London or right near St. James? Thanks!

On our first trip to London we stayed in Kensington, and loved the location. The other location I would consider would be near Victoria Station, if you want to walk everywhere. From there you can walk to Trafalger Square, Buckingham Palace, etc, easily. The Lime Tree in Belgravia is a nice hotel used by the Rick Steves Tours.

The Tower of London is at the far end of the tourist area, St. James Park is nicely centered for walking to most locations. Google maps lets you check walking distances to different tourist locations in London.

I agree with Cynthia--I would choose St James Park. It's much more centrally located.

St James is right in the heart of 90% of what a visitor wants to see in London- Buckingham palace, Westminster Abbey, Piccadilly Circus. Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, theater District. Tower is on the East end with "The City" in between you and the visitors london. Stay in St James. You will probably only visit the Tower area for half a day in your stay
