Hey Rick Stevers! I need your suggestions. I will be making an overnight connection at Heathrow in April 2009. I will land at 9 in the evening and depart at 11 the next morning. I will only have one Rick Steves backpack. I am looking for the following:
1. Hotel that has a free shuttle to and from Heathrow.
2. Hotel that is clean and quiet.
3. Hotel that is reasonably price (hopefully under $130 for two people).
4. Hotel that has a breakfast or has a restaurant within walking distance.
I don't need fancy lobbies, help with muy bags, or most other guest services. I'm looking for clean, quiet and reasonable price. Any suggestions?
It's great to have a "swamee of Euro travel". Thanks again to everyone!
I like to stay at Heathrow Lodge. It has all these amenities and the cost may be under-budget. There is a pub across the street and another one about 1/4 mi down the road. I think you can get breakfast at the lodge if you don't depart real early. Of course, it is easy to get breakfast/coffee at the airport. Check their website. I think you can just Google them.
This page will get you started in your hotel search.
Thanks a bunch Tim and Swam. I'm checking it out as soon as I post this reply. I appreciate your suggestions.
Does anyone else have suggestions? A favorite airport hotel that meets the requirements?
Thanks again!
Happy Travels!
Corrections...it should be thanks to Swan, not Swam. My keyboarding is not up to par sometimes. Sorry about the mistake with the spelling.
Have a great day!
James: Swam is okay because Swan is known here as the Swamee of Euro Travel.
I got us a room at the Crowne Plaza at Heathrow next month for $82.37 using HOTWIRE. This is the 4th or 5th time I've used the service and haven't gotten a rotten room yet. Just specify London Heathrow in your search. You don't know what hotel you're getting (until after you make your purchase) but you do know things like physical location (in relationship to the airport), airport shuttle etc. There are, I believe, no free hotel shuttles. I forget what it's called but there's a dedicated bus service to all the airport hotels. I think it was say 4 pounds each way. You can buy tickets inside the terminal (after customs) or on the buss itself (have English pounds - obtain at a Heathrow ATM). I've stayed at the Sheraton, Holiday Inn Express and I forget where else at Heathrow. All had on site resturants. You must have the credit card used to make the reservation with you at check-in if you use HOTWIRE. P.S. There is a Mark's and Spencer's at Terminal 2 (well, the terminal American Airlines docks at). You can pick up a wonderful lunch from there and save some dollars. Delicious fresh food (like an upscale Trader Joes).
Two more options ...
1) YOTEL right in the airport. If you are looking for a place to sleep and shower, this could not be more convenient ... but it is quite small. I have not stayed at the one at Heathrow, but I have stayed at the one at Gatwick. Check out reviews on tripadvisor. You won't need a shuttle here, but you will have to get breakfast in the airport.
2) Try priceline "Name your own price" and choose the London Heathrow area. You won't know if the hotel has a free shuttle or breakfast, but you might be able to get a room at a very low price. Biddingfortravel.com has tips on bidding on priceline.
Everyone has been super! I'm researching all the suggestions and will make a decision in the coming days. Thanks again!
Swim, swam, swum. The Heathrow Lodge shuttle was free in May. Just be sure to get on their shuttle schedule when you arrive, or before. They were starting their shuttle service at 6 am. I'm not sure if the breakfast is included since I've left early both times I've stayed there. I prefer getting to the airport and thru security before having breakfast.
Swan...Thanks again. You have been super! We would like to go with the Lodge but we may need to go with Hotwire or Priceline (as noted above) or the other hotels listed above. The Heathrow Lodge looks great but there may be one small problem for us. The free shuttle stops running at 10 p.m. and we are scheduled to touch down at 9 p.m. (if the plane is on time). Since we only have two small backpacks (no waiting for luggage), we should be able to be at the stop in time before the shuttle stops running. If the plane is late, we would most likely have to get a taxi. We may be gun-shy (and please forgive us), but we hate taxis. The last 3 taxi trips we have taken have been a rip-off. In Athens in May we were unsure where our hotel was. We took a taxi. We ended up traveling less than 2 miles and it cost 25 euros. The next morning we walked the same distance in 12 minutes. We know a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch, but past history has taught us not to trust taxi drivers. In Paris we paid 20 euros for a 4 minute ride (once again unsure where we were going). In Bucharest it started raining and we were unprepared. We paid $25 for a 2 minute ride. It may be our dumb luck, but taxis have not been kind. Is there ANY OTHER way to the Heathrow Lodge except the hotel shuttle and taxis. Does the Hoppa run by the Lodge? Thanks again and happy travels!
To my knowledge the Heathrow Lodge is the ONLY accommodation at Heathrow offering a free shuttle.
All others use the Heathrow Hoppa that costs 4 GBP per person each way.
If you have to use the Heathrow Hoppa for some reason get the one to the Thistle Hotel Heathrow about 300 yards from the Heathrow Lodge.
I would counsel against using Priceline bidding or hotels like the Crowne Plaza, a favourite Priceline hotel as they are so often a false economy. The Crowne Plaza is remote, you have to use the Heathrow Hoppa for transfers, for two people thats $30 for transfers. Breakfasts are around $30 upwards each and everything is priced accordingly.
The Heathrow Lodge is quite basic. At weekends you should get hotels like the Holiday Inn Bath Road, Ibis and Premier Inn Bath Road for about $100.
All these have 24x7 public buses that pass the door and are free from bus station at Heathrow and are much more frequent than the Hoppa Buses.
Breakfasts are much cheaper, partly because these hotels know you can walk out the door to a McDonalds, pub or supermarket for supplies - unlike the Crowne Plaza
Bob...Thanks for your insight. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Everyone has been super. I will try to make a decision this week.
Bob in London is right about the Crowne Plaza breakfast costing alot although I don't really think of the hotel as "remote" of course what is, coming from California. I haven't found a Heathrow hotel yet that offered a free breakfast (my bad luck maybe). On that note I've never been in a hotel in the U.K. without a tea/coffee kettle in the room. We have our tea/coffee and get breakfast from Mark's and Spencer's at the airport.
When I looked at the airport map, the hotels on Bath road look very close to the airport. Is noise a problem at those locations? Maybe the Crowne Plaza being "remote" means it's quieter?
James, check out Travelodge to see if they have what you need. We have found their prices can't be beat for a clean, good location, quiet place to stay. However, we have never needed their services at Heathrow.
