Please help me with transportation from Gatwick airport to Salisbury and Bath without going into London. I am checking trains, buses, and car hire, and would like suggestions. Thank you.
According to the Journey Planner at www.nationalrail.co.uk, you can take a First Great Western train to Reading, changing to another First Great Western train to Bath Spa.
You can take a Southern train to Clapham Junction, changing to a South West train to Salisbury.
According to www.nationalexpress.com, you can take a National Express coach to Heathrow, changing to another coach to Bath Spa. You would also change at Heathrow to connect with a coach to Salisbury.
Thanks for the information.
I am thinking that maybe a Britrail & drive pass will be more economical and convenient. This way we can take the train to Salisbury or Bath from Gatwick, drive to Stonehenge, Avebury, and on to Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon; drop off the car; then train to Scotland, then back to London.
With a Britrail pass, do we need to make train reservation for each segment in advance, or just show up at the station and show the pass? Can we use the pass for Gatwick - Salisbury/Bath?
No reservation is needed so with a pass you can just show up and get on any train. However, if the train is full (highly unlikely), you'll have to stand. Yes, you can use the pass for Gatwick-Salisbury/Bath.
