Richard,

It would also help to know what type of budget you're considering for the meals? Also, what part of London will you be staying in?

My answer would be to go to a pub. We had great pub food there, and they usually have a wide selection of beer and wine. Upstairs there is usually a dining room if you want a quieter, but slightly more expensive place to dine. "The Princess of Wales" was one we liked which is near Gordon's Wine Bar in Villiers Street.

We enjoy all types of food, except sushi. Price range 20 - 50 GPS per person.
Staying near West End / Covent Garden

Pub Grub is very good- there are several good Pubs near the Covent Garden Market. Also- down the street in the Neal St. area is an Italian place called Cafe Pasta- very nice. Just down from there is a Mediterian place called the Farmhouse Table. Owned by a Lebanize family. Excellent roasted lamb and good pork chops with a nice wine list. None of these are too expensive- just nice mid-range places. China Town is a great place to go, too. We like a place called Top Of The Town. They do excellent Kung Po, sizzling plates, Canton Roasted Chicken. We like to get their mixed appitizers to start-- very, very, very good!!!!!!

If you walk 15 minutes north you gt to Drummond Street, just across the Euston Road. There are several excellent Indian restaurants there. My favourite is the Diwani Bhel Poori which is vegetarian, but others do meat dishes. Chicken tikka is now the most popular dish in the UK, so you should sample some indian food.

For thirty years I've been going to Jimmy's, a Greek restaurant in Frith Street in Soho, and it has barely changed. More details here

The Lamb and Flag in Rose Street in Covent Garden is a very traditional pub doing substantial pub lunches and good beer. 300 years old it used to be called the Bucket of Blood because of the bare knuckle fights held here. The poet John Dryden was attacked and almost killed in a brawl here. It's now much more civilised!

Cheers

We also love Lamb & Flag--the food is excellent. Several elderly ladies appear to be the cooks there. And the atmosphere is delightful. It is near Covent Garden. Also very good is Old Cheshire Cheese which has been there during sixteen sovereigns. We were just there a week ago and they had fires burning and it was quite cozy. If you want to dine a bit more upscale, try the Wolsley on Picadilly. The Boxwood Cafe, a Gordon Ramsey restaurant, is nice and affordable if you order carefully.

I was not impressed with the fish and chips at the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. They left the skin on the fish fillet before they breaded it. Maybe it was just a one-time deal, but it was pretty terrible. Much better at "The Princess Of Wales" on Villiers Street, and only GBP6.95! A pint of London Pride was GBP2.50.

Hi Richard, We always try to have dinner at Browns Restaurant on St Martins Lane at least once when we're in London. Besides having good food like a steak and Guinness pie, they have a set menu of two courses at a time convenient to the pre-theatre crowd. One of us would order a starter and a main and the other of us would order a main and a dessert. This way we could share both the starter and the dessert/pudding. Something a little more posh? Simpsons in The Strand. p.s. I also try to see "The Mousetrap" at least once.

As Laurel mentioned The Mousetrap it is good. It's been running for 56 years.
