London

My husband and I have one day in London to tour before our guided tour begins. We have been to London before and visited Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Harrods, Westminster Abbey, Churchill War Rooms, St. Pauls Cathedral, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Maritime Museum at Greenwichand took a boat trip up the Thames River to Greenwich . What are other attractions we need to visit? Thanks. Pam

If you visit only one art museum in London, make it the National Gallery. Walk across the street to see the statue of Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square. Walk across the street again and have lunch in the Cafe-in-the-Crypt in St Martin-in-the-Fields church. There are free concerts at 13:00 on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.

Kew Gardens makes a great day or half-day out. Take the tube. Walk in lovely splendor! Lots to see, from greenhouses built in the late 1800 or early 1900s to a mini redwood forrest! One of my favorite things to do in London. I also second Windsor Castle. Take the train from Paddington Station (one easy change at Slough). The castle tour will take about 2-4 hours, but the town itself is also great. Woderful shops- everything from 'high street' to market stalls. Greenwich is also a nice day. The park is one of my favorities in London. they have a nice market on the weekends. And you can see the Naval Observatory and the prime meridian.

Don't need to visit anything but how about exploring London neighborhoods on foot. Could start in Hampstead, explore the village, then stroll into the Heath. End up at on S. End Rd @ S Hill Park. Stop for coffee and enjoy Daunt Books. From there walk to Pond Street and turn right, heading over to Rosslyn Hill/Haverstock Hill (it changes names) and turn Left. Follow this busy road that is part residential with churches, shops, cafes, intersperesed down to the Beleize Park tube station. Hop on the tube (only if you are tired of walking, otherwise just keep walking) and take the tube to Camden Town. ( Northern Line 2 stops) Hop out at Camden Town to explore the vibrant Camden Lock market and adjacent canals. Loads of places to eat. Countless vendors. Have lunch. Shop or stroll. Once you've experienced it walk along the adjacent canal around and down to the Constitution Pub in Camden Town. Have a pint or two with the locals. From there head out back to the Camden Town tube stop and get back to your accommodation. If your not tired take the tube to Leicester Square see what's available at the 1/2price ticket booth for that evening. For me theatre is a MUST when I'm in London. Go nearly every night. Just a thought.

London is perhaps, the greatest city on the planet. Do not treat it as a tourist attraction. What interests you and your husband? Odds are, something in London will appeal to those interests. If not, I suggest a long walk along the South Bank from Westminster to Borough Market, lunch at the market, then idle along to Tower Bridge. The Thames is the core of London and if you read up on the territory. you'll be richly rewarded.

In town, the Museum of London is very interesting, with lots of Roman Britain history of London, and some Roman Britain artifacts, along with many other artifacts and displays about the city's history. The National Portrait Gallery (St Martin's Place, off Trafalgar Square, adjoining the National Gallery), where you can see portraits of famous British leaders, such as Henry the 8th and the Tudors, and more recent famous people. Imperial War Museum. lots of planes and war history exhibits. Out of town, Windsor Castle and/or Hampton Court, as someone else has suggested. You mentioned you had already been to the British Museum. You could go back there; one visit is not nearly enough to see all that they have.

I would second the Museum of London, great place. Also would recommend Gordon's Wine Bar just down from Trafalgar Square beside Charing Cross on Villers Street. Have a great time, London is an awesome city.

The National Gallery is well worth a morning. The British may have started collecting art later than the French, but they did it with a large budget and a small space. The quality there is very high. The National Portrait Gallery is fun and just across Trafalgar Square from the National Gallery. If you know your British history or like British pop culture either one you will like it. Ride the London Eye. If you liked the Churchill War Rooms, consider the Imperial War Museum. Take one or more of the walks in Rick Steves, or get a copy of London Walks, which is excellent.

If you have any interest in modern art, the Tate Modern is quite impressive. Plus the walk over the millennium bridge from St. Paul's is good in and of itself. Otherwise, Hyde Park is a good way to spend a nice day. Or go back to something you especially liked the first time. I personally think the British Museum is worth many visits.
