"The Tower is closed 24-26 December (inclusive) and 1 January." Might find things a bit busier than normal on a bank holiday though. As the name suggests banks will be closed.

Bank holidays in the UK are like public holidays in the US or Texas. Think Memorial Day. Barbeques, family get togethers, school's out, go see grandma, take the kids to see the Tower of London, etc. It just means two things, really. First - public transport like trains and underground and buses will be busier than usual, and because the track maintenance people can take advantage of a three day weekend there is often "planned engineering work" which can cause a bit of a ruckus but less if you plan ahead and have you plan B worked out ahead. Second - big attractions will be busier because not only tourists will be visiting them. Third - if the weather cooperates there will be mad dashes to the coast and parks.

Because the kiddos will be out in the wild (English schools don't finish for the year until July) for the holiday there will be plenty of folk about. Expect the Friday and Monday to be worst (especially on the roads and transport).

Nigel, do you think the National car rental desk at the Glasgow airport will be open on the bank holiday, May 27th? I want to drop my rental off that day, but haven't received an answer yet from National. Calling tomorrow, hoping I have the right contact info. Just thought you might could lend some insight. :) Thanks

I have no knowledge of either car rentals or Glasgow, unfortunately. I would be floored if a car rental desk were closed on one of the busiest days of the year. I would call for you but the telephone number comes with a large surcharge so I won't.
