I am planning a trip to London, late May thru early June, for 2 weeks. I plan to tour London and do day trips, and I'll be using public transportation, rail pass etc. My son (adult) would like to come along. I don't think we could share a room as I'm early to bed, early to rise and he is the opposite. An apartment seems like it would be a solution if its not too much more expensive than a reasonable hotel would be. I like the idea of not having to eat out all the time. I have found LOTS of sites for apartments- does anyone have any recommendations, please.
My wife and I are planning on getting an apartment in 2012 for the Olympics. We plan on staying in the Greenwich area so we can take the DLR (Docklands Light Rail) to the majority of the venues. I guess it depends on where you want to stay. But as long as you're near a tube station or DLR station it's easy to get anywhere you need.
We have used www.holiday-rentals.co.uk several times and always had good luck. We've rented both flats and houses from them in Germany and England. They always have a wide variety of locations, types of rentals and prices. Always be sure and check the cancellation policy and how much of a deposit you have to put down. I always email 5 or more places because I generally only get 3 responses. I ask tons of questions if their descriptions are not very detailed. If you have any other questions send me a private message and I'll be happy to help.
Thanks, Karen. Did you find them on a par price wise with hotels?
Generally they were better but it can depend on the location and time of year. We've always stayed outside of the city, we usually have a car, so things are cheaper. Like you said, we don't like eating out all the time if we can help it so that's why we choose to rent flats or houses. I know it sounds weird to most people but we also enjoy going to the supermarkets over there, we always find lots of things that look good that we want to try. We've had many memorable meals (both good and bad) cooking it ourselves. Plus that can save a lot of money.
A lot of times I will compare a hotel in the same area of the flat to see which is better, the flat or house has almost always won out in our case.
Let me know if you have any other questions or need more help.
We always try to get an apartment over a hotel - for many reasons including the ability to make our own breakfast and other meals, privacy, a room other than a bedroom etc. London is awfully expensive and you will pay a premium for a 2 bed apartment although many 1 beds will have a sofa bed in the living room - which may or may not work for you.
I have not stayed here but believe it is good - and brilliantly located but the prices jump for 2 bed.
