I've been to London many times but am taking my husband for a day or two on a layover. Any suggestions for a man that doesn't like museums or history much? So far my plan is to just walk around and stop in a pub or two.
Christina, Would your husband be interested in one of the Musicals? There are usually some good ones playing in London. If he's against visiting any of the Museums or Galleries, walking around and checking the Pubs is certainly one idea. There are also some good restaurants there, so you might enjoy that one evening. If you like Italian, Santini's in the Victoria Station area is great (at least that's been my experience). You could also check out Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Restaurant. Cheers!
What does he like? Kew Gardens; river cruise; Theater; London parks, Sports? What does he want to see in London? If you are on a layover i assume you are goinmg to or from something- what did he want to see there? need more information
I can never see enough of London. However, you can cruise from London all the way to Greenwich in one direction (with all its attractions) or via Kew gGardens via Hampton Court to Richmond at th other on regularly scheduled bioats. Richmond is a nice riverside village to wande through and has good train and tube transport back to London. (Also found some interesting pubs and restaurants in the heart of the village) Google Thames river cruises for more information and choices
We like to wander around Big Ben, Parliment, Trafalgar Square, Picadilly Circus and Covent Garden Market when we arrive. Kew Gardens is a lovely place and very peaceful. Windsor is also easy to reach and the castle and its gardens are just about my favorites. You can also get a Thames cruise there - and you get to see a bit of the countrside. There is also some good shopping in Windsor.
What about a castle? The Tower of London is a nice setting and can be pretty light on the history/museum aspect if you want it to be. Another idea is to check out the new Olympic park and Olympic venues. I'm not sure how much of it is open, but I know that all of the main venues are finished.
I like the idea of a river cruise, know of a good company? Definitely no to musicals or theater. I'm already dragging him to the Doctor Who Experience. We live in Cayman but this is the first time he will be out of the USA other than that. Our first night in London will be his first experience and I want him to want to go back!
Christina, Ask your husband to check out the Original London Walks schedule at www.walks.com. I recommend the walks themselves, but even if you don't go with them, the breadth of their subjects from music, to espionage, to literature, to politics, to ghosts, etc. might give him (and you) some ideas beyond "museums or history" sites.
Very simple answer to your question. Once you get to your where you are staying, find the nearest tube stop and head toward the Westminster on the Jubilee line, leave the train at Westminster and take exit 1, London Eye, Bridgewalk. As you climb the few steps you walk out and see the Thames and the London Eye. Hopefully, he will realize he's now in one of the greatest cities on the planet!. As he stares across to the EYE turn him to his right and ask him to look up. You'll be looking at Big Ben. Each time I take newbies to London I make this our first stop. Never fails to thrill them or me. Fight the crowds and head away from the bridge to Parliment Street/Whitehall Road. Turn right and walk to the Red Lion Pub a block up. Have your first pint there amongst members of Parliament and their staffs. Cheers.
