Liverpool Lodging and Ferry

I'll be travelling to Liverpool in July for the British Open. I imagine that the lodging options are pretty well picked over by now, but does anyone know of any 'hidden gems' or B&Bs that may be overlooked? Rick only lists 2 hotels and the hostel in his book.

Also, after checking into a possible ferry from Liverpool to Dublin I noticed one leaves from Birkenhead and one from Liverpool. The one from Liverpool doesn't seem to allow you to make a reservation without a vehicle...is this really the case?

Thanks for the help.

First things first - the open is at Royal Birkdale and, despite anything you've been told, that is at Southport. Google Southport and get in quick with the accommodation, there's still places to be had at reasonable rates. Also try nearby Formby for accommodation.

Next, regarding the ferries from Birkenhead and Liverpool to Ireland. You only need to book if you're taking a car. Foot passengers just turn up ( early ) pay and board. You won't even need to show a passport.

Thanks.

I know Royal Birkdale is in Southport, but with having to take a ferry, wouldn't Liverpool be an easier base for this?

I've been to England before, but not to Liverpool so I don't really know the logistics. I'm assuming that taking the train from Liverpool to Southport (or Hillside) will be my best bet?...or will there be better options? Will they expand the rail service during The Open and add more connections to Southport?

Thanks again.
