Liverpool area

I'll be in a suburb of Liverpool for a week for a work-related trip... I have a lot of free time, though so I was wondering if there's much to see in the area by train. I heard Chester was a good daytrip, though I'm not sure how expensive the train fare would be.

I fly out of London and have a hotel beside Paddington station. Are there any good walks around that area? I probably won't arrive until around dinner time when a lot of attractions will be closed.

Thanks!

If you are interested, the Anglican Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral in Liverpool are worth a visit. Two very different architectural styles. The Anglican is more of the old traditional with large Gothic arches and the Catholic is very modern concrete and steel. The top of the bell tower in the Anglican has a great 360 view of Liverpool.

I can't tell you how to get there because we were very fortunate to be chauffeured by the very distant shirt tail relative that we stayed with in Southport.

I think they are at opposite ends of Hope Street, about 1/2 mile apart. We parked at the Anglican and walked to the Catholic and back.

I know that there is much more to see in Liverpool, but we were on very short visit with these relatives.

Jared, we just came back from 2 weeks in the UK and my favorite place was Liverpool. It is so beautiful now. The docks have been redone and just walking them is so relaxing. There's a special exhibit that Julian and Cynthia Lennon put together called "White Feather." It's running till December 31st and is located at the Beatles Story Pier Head. There's a wonderful Indian restaurant at 18 Stanley street called "Spice City." It's so good were hoping RS will include it in his next update on Liverpool. We also heard there's some wonderfully relaxing beaches just north of the city. I think you'll be surprised at how updated Liverpool has become.

I don't think you are going to pay any more than £4.50 each way Liverpool to Chester by train. Journey takes about 40 mins each way. You will need Liverpool Central Station rather than Liverpool Lime Street Station.

I just read a great article in the current Realm magazine on Chester and it sounds like a great idea for a day trip. (Bought Realm at Borders.) I visited Chester briefly on business a few years ago, but it was raining and I only saw a glimpse of the walls. It's on my list of places to go back to. Pam

Jared, Liverpool is great. I grew up as a huge Beatle fan and had an impression of Liverpool as one big slum. I was amazed at what a nice city it is. There is some fabulous architecture. Unfortunately, we ended up spending very little time there do to having one of those if anything can go wrong kind of days in Chester before we left. Then we got to Liverpool (around 2:30 pm) to find it was one big parking lot. It turns out that the Queen, Yoko Ono, and Paul McCartney were all in town. I ask you, what are the odds of that? Anyway, we only had time to walk around a bit and take the Magical Mystery Tour, which was great fun. It was a little hokey, but I loved seeing places from the Beatles' childhood.

Chester is a nice city for a day trip. By all means go, regardless of the train cost. You have to take these opportunities when you get them.
