Hi, does anyone have a suggested route from Lisdoonvarna to Dingle? Andy

Take the coast road to Tarbert (or Killimer - never can remember which is on which side of the river), and take the car ferry across the River Shannon. A 20 minute crossing will shave miles off of your trip. Check www.viamichelin.com for the route numbers.

We just drove this area a couple of weeks ago and I have my maps handy.
If you have time I'd take N67 down to Quilty and just south of Quilty I'd take R483 to Kilrush. From Kilrush I'd take N67 to Killimer and take the ferry. It runs every hour on the hour most of the year, except in June, July & August, when it's every half hour. It takes about 20 minutes and you can get out of your car and enjoy the ride across the River Shannon. Then at Tarbert I'd take N69 through Listowel and then Tralee where you pick up N86. We went over Conor Pass. You take R560 just before Camp (it's well signed). We went back over N86, which is also quite pretty but Conor Pass is so much fun and a great view. If you have extra time, though, I'd add on a detour in Co. Clare (it may mean an extra night between Lisdoonvarna & Dingle though). We spent the night in Kilkee and took the "scenic drive" just on the south side of the bay (the Ordnance Survey doesn't have a road number but you can ask someone in Kilkee, there's a sign as you drive along the south side of the bay, I think it was the 3rd left, it said "Scenic Drive") Oh man! was it ever! It winds along the coast and you get several spots with amazing cliff & ocean views, similar to the Cliffs of Moher (just not as tall). It's all farmland and when we drove it we saw practically no one. We then went back onto R487 (that's what it ends on) and drove all the way to Loop Head and then back. Are you spending the night in Lisdoonvarna for sure? I might be wrong but I seem to recall that the closest ATM was in Ennistymon.

Great post Laura. The Loop Head drive looks fantastic. We will probably not get to this on this trip. I am wondering if a swing out to Kilkee as we are dropping down N67 would be feasible on the way to Dingle? I just don't have a sense of how much time this Lisdoonvarna to Dingle will take. What are your thoughts on this detour out to Kilkee as we motor down to Dingle? Thanks again Laura for all this information. It is wonderful.

Andy,
If you go to www.aaireland.ie then go to travel, you will get a drop down menu. Choose route guidance. You can put in your origin, destination, and any towns in between. You can get a good idea from that what is the most direct route and an idea of how long it will take.

Andy, I'm not sure I'd drive down to Kilkee just to do if you aren't going to do the Scenic Drive (and you could skip going to Loop Head). The best drives, besides the Burren, were along the coast & as I recall, from Quilty to Kilkee was more inland.
