Lerwick, Shetland Islands

We will be in Lerwick for part of one day next September. Will only have about 6 hours. Any suggestions as to best way to spend time? Must sees? Book a tour? If so, any suggestions? thanx.

Hi Duane, I would suggest that you check out the listing on Undiscovered Scotland. If it were me, I'd want to see the Mousa Broch. It is the best preserved Broch anywhere. I've seen the ones on Skye, Harris, and near Golspie, but I think this is one significantly more impressive. I think I would spend any left over time exploring the town of Lerwick. Sadly, missed out on a trip to Shetland last June. :(

I took a tour to Jarlshof, a 4000-year-old village, at the south end of Mainland (the largest island, where Lerwick is), just past the airport. Well worthwhile, and lots of great scenery along the way. Mousa Broch is on a smaller island, may be visible from Mainland but will take longer to get there. This website may help you find a tour operator (mine was booked through a cruise line).
