Last minute trip to Scotland - Reservations needed in May?

This will be our first trip to the north and I was wondering if we will find it easy to just "wing it" at this time of year in the highlands and countryside and find B&Bs as we go. I am going to book a few nights in Edinburgh to start us off. Are there any scenic/pastoral parts of Scotland that are less frequented by tourists?

The western highlands, Skye, etc., are likely to be the most touristed. On the other hand, less touristed places will have fewer offerings. I suspect you will be fine, assuming you aren't there on a local holiday. I'm a bit paranoid about these things, so I'd like to have booked a place by 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

Are you a couple? Getting two twins or a double are the easiest to get. I've had trouble with a Single at peak times, but May is not peak, so you will likely be fine. If you have trouble, or are worried stop off at the Tourist Info and they can help. There is a charge, but it can give peace of mind. Pam

Thanks for the suggestions, we will try to get a place early in the day and check with tourist information offices. Has anyone taken the Jacobite Train trip?

There is an astonishing website that offers a unique perspective on touring Scotland by car, with emphasis on the 'Secret' parts of Scotland. Have a look at http://www.secret-scotland.com. I hope this catches you before you go!
