We fly into Dublin then drive to Kilkenny to Kinsale to Dingle then north to ???. Thinking of going through Adare, dinner at Bunratty (mom insists), would like to see Connemara then back close to Dublin airport. Any suggestions? We have 5 nights after we leave Dingle. We prefer not to do 1 night stands!
Could you put some of your 5 nights in before Dingle? If so, Kenmare is a great stop-you can easily access both the Ring of Beara (check out the movie Ondine to see what it looks like) and the Ring of Kerry from there.......We enjoyed our banquet at Bunratty Castle and we usually hate anything touristy!......In Connemara, you might want to visit Clifden and / or take the ferry over to the largest Aran Island as a daytrip. Drive up past Delphi, the scenery there is spectacular.
I was disappointed in Adare. It is a pretty town, the main road that runs through the middel is reallly busy, which kills the atmosphere. I would suggest spending time in the Burren and visiting the Cliffs of Moher. If you don't mind more driving, Connemara would be nice -- it is quite beautiful.
I was disappointed with Adare too. It is pretty but a bit of a tourist trap and in retrospect I wouldn't have stopped there for any period of time. You could stay in Galway and use it as a base to explore Galway City, Connemara, the Burren, and the Cliffs of Moher. Connemara and Dingle were the most beautiful parts of our trip.
How about 2 nights in Doolin, one after going to Bunratty, then another day there to see the cliffs and the Burren (and hit the pubs that night). After that, you could go to Connemara, or use Galway as a base for exploring. It's an easy drive from Galway to Dublin.
Thanks for the advice. We have a 12:30 flight out of Dublin and wanted to be close to the airport for the last night. The driving times have me confused and we dont want to spend all day in the car but want to see everything!!! We are spending 3 nights in Dingle. I guess we will skip Adare, just wanted to see the thatched roofs! If we stayed in Galway area is the drive for day trips okay to Connemara?
You'll see a good deal of thatched roof cottages in Ireland (and the Cotswolds in England if you ever go there). The Connemara area is in western County Galway and is around 1 hour or less away from Galway City, if I remember correctly. It's a must see!
The drive around Dingle is everything Rick says it to be, so allow enough time to do that. Going north, the Burren is worth the stop, and don't forget the Cliffs. We spent several days in Galway and used that as the base to explore Connemara. When you head east toward Dublin, consider crossing into Northern Ireland and Armagh. Lovely little town about an hour and a half north of Dublin airport. Has a fantastic museum and old earthen fort from the Celtic days. Also, between there and airport, a couple of good castles to explore.
