Lands End and Cornwall

We have been tossing around some ideas for new regions to explore and are thinking about spending a week along the southern coast of England and Lands End. We have been to London a few times and Warwickshire and a few places in between. Any ideas or opinions would be appreciated.

We stayed in Penzance which is a good place to base yourself to visit Lands End and many other wonderful Cornish places of interest - St.Ives, St.Michael's Mont etc. We enjoyed the best weather for the whole of our UK stay last April in Cornwall.

Lise, My sister and I used Mevagissey as our base for exploring Cornwall. We went to Lands End, Tintagel, The Lost Gardens of Heligen & Jamaica Inn among other places. There was a very lot we did not have time to see which I'm sure others will tell you about. Mevagissey is not a large place. Our B&B looked over the rooftops to the sea and was only a short walk to the center of town. We went to "our local" every night and even joined in on "quiz night". Our team lost.

We have been to Cornwall several times. If you would like to stay at places right above the water which aren't extremely expensive, we have found two of them. One was Housel Bay Hotel located on the Lizard Peninsula. The other was the Headlands Hotel near Tintagel. Both were full of Europeans, not overrun with American tourists. Both locations serve dinner. Cornwall has spectacular scenery, extensive prehistoric sites, and lovely ruined castles. We also enjoyed the Lost Gardens of Heligan. There are lots of charming villages, much nicer than the larger towns.

Forty years ago we stayed in Boscastle - near Tintagel Castle. It is a 13th century village and most picturesque. I think where westayed was called Bottreaux House and is still there, but is modernized as they advertise ensuites, which they did not have when we were there! Scenery is wonderful along teh north coast and the south coust is an easy day tip. I would think the roads are improved now from when we were there.
