Lake District Train Connections

We are spending a few days in the Ambleside or Keswick area in late September.
I found it difficult to get a train from this area in the past. We want to travel to Burnley, Lancs. Any tips on where to make the best connections?

I have a friend in Burnley. :) There's a bus from the Keswick Bus Station to the train station in Penrith (about 15 miles), then train from Penrith to Burnley Central (or Burnley Manchester Road) with a change in Preston. The first leg is on Virgin Trains, the second on Northern Rail.

If you're in Ambleside & travelling fairly light, get down to the ferry at Waterhead and go down the lake to Bowness. Walk, bus or if there is one, taxi up to Windermere train station. That puts you on the trans-Pennine express (a slightly grand name for a small train, but the views are good!). Either direct to Preston, or with a change at Oxenholme for the Preston, then change for the train to Burnley.
If the ferry is inconvenient because of luggage or if it's hooning down a vertical river (there's a reason all those lakes are there!), then there are buses from Ambleside straight to Windermere station. If you google "Cumbria county council bus services" for that bit, and use a site like nationalrail.co.uk to look up the train times from Windermere you should be able to get a workable connection. Enjoy your trip!
