I am flying into Manchester airport and wanted to know how far of a drive/how long it would take to drive to Keswick? What about Windermere. Could you recommend a B&B in the area, preferably near Keswick?
Oh this is so easy. The most difficult thing to remember is we drive on the left hand side.
From Manchester airport follow the signs for the M6 ( North ) - if in doubt you are heading towards Liverpool NOT Birmingham.
Once on the M6 head north until you see signs for Kendal.
Follow the road into Kendal, park up, have a drink in one of the quaint little tea shops, buy a good map and plan your route to Keswick.
The road out of Manchester airport is a full six lane motorway, the same goes for the M6. Once you're at Kendal, you're in the Lake District and the roads get narrow and slow. Slow is the watchword. Take your time, Keswick is very well signposted, follow the signs, enjoy the scenery and have a great time.
There are hundreds of really nice B&Bs everywhere and they are all to a very good standard. Simply choose one that you like and that has vacancies. The Lake District is one of those places where you do things at your own pace and as your desires lead you.
Oh yes - I forgot. It normally takes about 2 hours to get to the lakes from Manchester airport. Allow another half hour because you're on unfamiliar roads.
