Can anyone give advice on cycling or hiking in Killarney National Park? Is it truly spectacular? What are the logistics of renting a bicycle?
Are the hiking trails just walking paths or hiking trails that leave you slightly winded but with magnificent views?
I haven't rented a bicycle in Killarney, but the trails would be perfect for a bike on a nice day. The trails I walked on - across the street from St. Mary's in town to Muckross - were wide and flat. It was a pretty long walk but would be an easy, and enjoyable bike ride. It's mostly flat forest in that area. The park does pick up some hills around the lakes but I haven't been on those trails.
We walked around Muckross Lake and to the waterfall. Mostly level, but about 3-4 miles, if I remember right. So, maybe not "spectacular" but very pretty. Beautiful, mossy forest, with some huge ancient yew trees. Lake views, of course. A few spots with views of the surrounding hills. There is a little lunch place on the far side of the lake where you can stop and reward yourself with a snack or sandwich. There are more vigorous hikes, but you might have to wait until you get there to find out. The little information booth next to Muckross House might have info for you.
