Itinerary Help - Trip w/ Teens - England

We are planning a trip next year to Europe with our 13 and 17 year old boys and 16 year old daughter. We have been several times and hit many of the high points, but with our kids going, we find it difficult to plan. Our big problem is that we want to start in a smaller city for the jet lag recovery and were trying to decide between York and Bath. WE have three nights alloted for this, so we want to be somewhere that gives us some flexible options for touring outside of town, yet has more than just museums and castles as our kids have made it clear that they would like some diversity from the museum, castle, church scene to just explore and take everything in.
Any help would be appreciated, including places to stay.

Thanks,

While we enjoy both Bath and York, I have to admit that York is much more fun. There is the Jorvic Viking exhibit (more like a Disney ride than a museum), the Shambles (shopping in a mideval part of town), the town wall to walk around, a train museum, and nearby castles. But you really won't need 3 days to recuperate. If you fly into London, why not spend at least 1 night there, then train to York- 1 or 2 nights, train to Edinburgh, 2 nights, train to Inverness- 3 to 7 nights with lots of day trips to Isle of Skye and Elien Donnan castle, boat trip up Loch Ness and stop at ruins of Urquart castle, boat trip on the firth, day trip to Orkney, day trip for walks in Glen Coe or Great Glen, Culloden battlefield, etc. Our kids loved Scotland when they were the ages of yours. Your family might enjoy a stop in Aviemore- lots of walks, horseback riding, and climing up the Caringorms. Feel free to PM me for ideas on day trips in London and Scotland.
