So, everyone says 16-18 days is a good start for Both Scotland and Ireland. Now, Anyone have a favorite route, or some must see places. Bigger cities are not really important, culture and small villages are! Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!! thanks, Jeff
I know you said you weren't going to focus on big cities, but Inverness is a wonderful place to visit. It makes a great base for much of the highlands. Drumnadrochit at the top of Loch Ness is also a nice place- small village, several good pubs, some nice craft shops (just skip the "monster" exhibits). Aviemore, while a bit of a tourist place for skiers, is also a good village. Lots to do- steam train, funicular up Mt. Caringorm, the Rothmurchie estate has hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, etc.; there are lots of distilleries nearby and a microbrewery in town that gives tours and samples.
Definitely pick up a copy of Rick's guides for info and to start building your itinerary.
If big cities are not your thing, then I would try to fly into Shannon in the west of Ireland. Focus your time in west and southwest, Counties Cork, Kerry, and Clare. Spend a few days in Dingle.
