Ian, we have been to Islay six times. You fly from Glasgow, or take the ferry from Kennacraig. Its best to rent a car on Islay. There are eight distileries there so if you are interstested in Scots Whiskey this is the place to go. Let's go to to private message and then to email if you want particulars.
It would be a lovely trip to go up to Skye from Edinburgh, spend a few days and then take your time heading south along the west coast to Islay. If you're looking for an Island in between, try Mull. I really liked that Island. BTW if you are interested in the history of Scotland, but don't want to read a textbook, or even a popular history, try Nigel Tranter's books. He's got several that look at the western isles. He looks at the time of Wars for Independence, and earlier. Great stuff. He does have very specific style of writing which is interesting. Pam
