Hi everyone,
Just wondering if Isle of Skye is a doable day trip from Inverness or if we should plan on trying to spend a night there?
It is very doable. Several companies run day trips to Skye and include Elien Donnan Castle as well. It is well worth it.
I live in Inverness and it depends what you mean by doable. It's about a 2 1/2 drive there and then of course the same back. It would take about 15 to 20 minutes longer if you followed Loch Ness which is of course a 'must see' at some point if you are in the area. You can take a day coach trip from Inverness, but then of course someone else is doing all the driving. Skye is a wonderful place and to 'do' Skye fully you would need more than one day. If all you want to do is say you have been to Skye then it is possible.
If you do decide to take longer, may I also suggest going to Glenelg, which has 2 Iron Age Brochs, the best preserved on mainland UK, and has a 6 car ferry that goes across to Skye. At this ferry you will certainly see seals and you have very good chance of otters too. Come back over the bridge of course, and thenjust dow theroad is Eilean Donan. Probably the most photographed castle in Scotland because of it's romantic position.
Thats meant to read 2 1/2 hours to drive
Hi Amber.
We went to Skye on the train for the day from Inverness. Next time I would stay overnight. Dozens of B & B options to chose from.
If you like tours, then take Toni's advice and do a one day trip. I am sure you could check on the web what you see. I expect it's Dunvegan Castle and some drives to see the scenery. If you are driving your self then take more time. That way you can stop and admire what you are seeing, There is more to Skye then Dunvegan castle and the pretty houses in Portree. I spent a week there on a photo workshop and even though it rained (serious rain, not just misty) we still saw a lot. There is a great jewelry story call Skye Jewelry I think. Beautiful opals!

Hi all,
Thanks for your suggestions. After a little more help and research and your suggestions, I think we are going to spend the night on Skye instead of trying to do it as a day trip. Thanks so much!!
Hi Rhonda or others from Inverness - I am traveling to Scotland in August and plan to stay on Skye for 2 days (after seeing Loch Ness Inverness 1st), but then drive to Inverness from Skye for a plane to Dublin at 12:30 pm. It's the only flight so I want to make sure not to miss it. How is the airport there? What time should we arrive to drop the rental car first? It will be on a Friday - how long should we allow for the drive to Inverness from Kyle of Lochalsh, without stopping at Loch Ness? Thanks so much!
I've always stopped off. I would use one of the sites that estimate time. You might want to post this as it's own question to get more answers. The airport is about the size of a typical small city in the US. It's smaller than our Madison airport, but has all the amenities. ; )

Allow at least 2 1/2 hours from the Kyle of Lochalsh to get to Dalcross (Inverness) airport. Hire cars are returned to about 30 yards from the airport entrance so that will take no time at all. Remember though that Highland roads are not fast. They are steep and winding and often only single track with passing places. There are no alternative routes so if you are behind a tractor you will stay there, going at the same speed as that tractor.
