Isle of Mull tour.. or on our own?

We have a couple of days in the Oban area. Would like to spend 1 full day on Mull (visiting Iona too) My question: Is is best to take the early ferry (7:45 with our car)drive to visit Iona, drive to Tobermory for dinner and then take the latest ferry back (7:00)? (I know it's a busy day)or, take the Bowman tour suggested by RS and skip Tobermory?

I think if you only have one day for Mull I would do the tour. The island is a lot bigger than you think. It's a bit of hike up to Tobermory. I remember it took well over an hour to get from Fionnphort to Tobermory with lots of wee roads. It's a lovely island. BTW the "Three Island Tour" was good too. You can see Mull, Iona and Staffa. I have only done the tour, so I can't compare it to doing it on your own. I can only tell you the tour was fantastic. It's a long day, but it's stress free because all of the transportation arrangements are made for you and timed perfectly.

Last year I took the three-day tour that also stopped at Staffa, and I highly recommend it. Staffa is a unique island with great scenery and very different from Iona or Mull.

My wife's family rented a house near Dervaig for a week a few years ago. There is alot to see on Mull but it requires a car and the roads are wee small. I do not know what is included on the tour. Duart,Torosay and Moy castles are on the way to Iona. Tomeroy is about a 30 minute drive but in very picturesque and worth the drive if you have the time. Glengorm castle is near there. There was enough to keep us busy for about 4 days on Mull. We also went to Isle of Ulva but unfortunately did not get to Staffa. Always a reason to go back. Of course, it rained most of the time but we were prepared for it.

If you take the tour, you will see Mull as you travel across in on a bus. If you want to get out and really see the sights on Mull, the tour may not be for you. If you have a good bus driver, you will learn a lot about Mull, but you will just see it through a window.

Thank you all for your responses. I'm still "mulling" it over, but leaning towards having our car.
