Isle of Man...help me want to go.

My wife and I try to go to Europe once a year. We just got back from France and now my wife would like to go to the Isle of Man. I am not terribly interested in the UK as a whole (for holiday) and am looking for inspiration. Please tell me that I will love it and should be excited to go (or not). I would be greatful for any pros/cons.

Thanks
Jeff

I've not been there, but I'd like to someday. I like visiting islands. They have different sense of place. The history is tied in with Celts and Vikings. I pretty sure that one of Dorothy Dunnett's books has reference to it. I think it's Macbeth. You might rent Waking Ned, which is a very funny film. Evidently, it was filmed on the Isle of Man, or at least some of it was. Check out their website. You've wildlife, history, railroads and I've got to like a place that lists picnic spots along with pubs and restaurants!

Yes, "Waking Ned Devine" was filmed on the Isle of Man. Its landscape is reminiscent of western Ireland.

You will see what you wish to see. Don't discount anyplace. Enjoy watching people, strange sights, special landscapes, unusual buildings-- in short, whatever you enjoy. "Inspiration" never comes from outside yourself

It's a step back in time. IOM is of course most famous for the TT races, those two weeks at the start of June that are a mecca for all fans of full thrust motorcycle racing.

For the remaining 50 weeks of the year it is an unspoilt island that proudly goes it's own way.

The scenery is phenominal. Because of the tax breaks on the island your pound goes much further than on the mainland. There are some really breathtaking places like the Laxey Wheel, Castletown and Peel.

Just as the laws and customs are unique to the island, so is the weather. It can change drastically in an hour.

The inhabitants of the island ( the Manx ) are about as friendly as it gets in Great Britain, by comparison the Irish are downright 'stand offish'.

I would recommend hiring a car to see all of the island. Car hire on the island is very cheap. Don't go through one of the major rental companies, go with a local company when you get there. Slow driving is the order of the day on the island, even though the roads have no speed limits.

It's a take-your-time, laid back, relaxing, sort of place.

My mothers side of my family hails from Ramsey on the Isle of Man, from way back in the 19th century. They came to the USA via Liverpool and Boston. I've always wanted to go there to see if I have any long lost family there.
